Skaters

robins
scuttle away
from the frozen lake
as skaters
glide on
making figure 8s.
gleaming trails
of shattered ice
trail behind
the swerving
people.

Ice (this won me first in state last year)

Gliding on the lake,
my skates
leaving a trail
of crumbled ice.
Tiny ice crystals
caught in my hair,
nipping at my neck.
The ice blanketed
 in snow,
 glimmering
 in the shadowy sun.
A skirt of leaves
around the lake
with dew shimmering.
Children sitting on the ice,
laughing with christmas spirit.
Trees ambushing the frozen land
with gray and bare branches
sticking out.
A duck sitting in the tiniest pool
of water,
trying to spare its habitat
as much as it can
A robbin with a ruby red chest
skitters by.
People all around
a sea of hats and
pom-poms.
children holding the backs of chairs
to keep there balance.
Smoke creeping over the ice
from the campfire
so carelessly controlled.
mugs of hot cocoa
rest in peoples hands
melting the cold away
camp fire songs
swimming through the air
scattered tents lie around
waiting for the night to come

Inspired by yhe lake I lived by in Holland
hey guys, do you know of any good poetry contests for my age group? (6th grade) if you do please give me the web site

Christmas concert

The chapel
vibrates
and booms
from the gleaming
gold symbols.
Hand bells
ring in the background
Clapping shutters
through the green
reeves
and through the pews.
The chorus
files on to the
steps
trailing up to the alter.
Folders
swish open
in unison.
Voices rise
and split
into a round
spreading spirit
though
the clustered
spirited audience.
clapping arouses again
as the doors
fly open.
Cool air
streams through
the chapel
sending a chill
down the hallway.
